Our Story

StreamBlocks has been a labour of love for the last 2 years for our team. It started when one of our team realised that to switch the lights on, with their newly installed “smart” wifi light switch, data packets were being sent to an unknown server and that without an internet connection, the app used would not work.

This brought to the fore issues of security, privacy, what happens when there is no internet connection,  as well as the obvious ones of latency and efficiency; StreamBlocks was born with a desire to resolve these issues.

The name derives from the term “blocks” used to describe “control blocks” used in process control, with the added feature of requiring synchronisation, when using the a system with inherent and unpredictable latency (such as the internet).

The objective of StreamBlocks was to develop a framework which would allow for cost effective and scaleable solutions for IoT devices that would be secure, upgradeable, with ease of integration. The framework can support a single device, such as a switch, to an Arduino built device, to the most complex synchronized control schemes, such as a remotely controlled washing machine or even a drone.

StreamBlocks also takes advantage of best in class technolgies, such as CUDA for neural network processing, artificial vision OpenCV for computer vision and RTK/GPS for centimetre level accuracy positioning, should these functions be needed. All are built in as standard in the StreamBlocks library.

We chose as our logo a teddy bear, inspired by the Speilberg movie AI (and not Milne’s Winnie the Pooh or one of Philip K Dick’s killer teddies !).
